Named after the first President, George Washington, the county was established in at the time of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 and organized in 1845. In 1853, the county was split into two, with the western side being today’s Washington County and the eastern side being today’s Ozaukee County.

Skiers and snowboarders can shred on at Little Switzerland and Sunburst Winter Sports Park. Little Switzerland, opened in 1941, is one of the Midwest’s first ski resorts! Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, bring the family to Sunburst to enjoy tubing down forty-five lanes with two “magic carpets” to bring you back up to the top.
